Belmont Avenue, 'West View'.

‘West View’ is one of the oldest houses in Belmont Avenue, being built in 1905 and sold in 1906.

The plot of land had been sold in 1903 by J Gigney to a builder from East Hanningfield, named John Rayner. At that time Belmont Avenue was in the Parish of Downham.

The west view from the house was, until the 1960s, across fields. Now the view is of modern houses built in the 60s.

The photographs below show ‘West View’ in 1949.

  • The main building of The Dingle is essentially the same in appearance but it was extended a few years ago.

  • No, The Dingle is further south down Belmont Avenue, at the junction with Leasway. I think it’s still the original building.

  • Did this house used to be called The Dingle? My father in law used to live in a house like this as a child in what is now Belmont Ave and which used to have tennis courts and lots of land and a small farm.
