  • Was Adcocks the newsagents in Wickford in the 40s and 50s?

  • I used to go to school just on the left of this picture. The school was run during the war and onwards. The name of the teacher was Miss Mason and if the air raid warning went she always put her dog into the air shelter before anyone else. The hedge hid the houses that are on the left. There were no properties on the right. The land at that particular time belonged to Franklins family. The next field alongside belonged to Patmores. George Patmore’s father bought the Swan Pub and did not realise that the land that is now the cricket field was in with the purchase. He later left the field to the Wickford Cricket Club in Trust.

  • While we were on the memory desk in the library on 25 August 2011, Mr Barry Adcock stated that he identified the scene as Swan Lane, circa 1935/40.
