  • Hi June, do you have any photos of ‘Ivanhoe’ at all? I’d love to see how the house was back then.

  • I lived in the house called ‘Ivanhoe’, with my parents, attached to Dear’s coal yard, from the early 70s for a few years. My father, Frank Jeffery, worked for Mr C J and Mrs Kath Dear in the winter and also their son Donald, doing land drainage. Don and wife Sue also lived in same house. When younger I worked Saturdays in coal office, but that was when Mr and Mrs Dear lived in ‘Ivanhoe’.

  • I was born in 1950 in Belmont Avenue, our house was called ‘Windermere’. We had about 4 acres which eventually was sold in 1961 and is now an estate.

  • Hi, I remember Dears coal yard. When we got married in1959 we lived up an unmade road, (Linden Road),we had coal fired heating and a coke boiler for hot water. We had to build a large coal bunker to store the coal etc, which was delivered in summer. We had bad winters then and if you ran out of fuel you had to go to Dears coal yard. You paid 3d for a bag then they would weigh out the coal, coke etc, and then pay about 8 shillings and then get it home.

  • Hello, I have just moved in on the London Road near to where the house is in the first photo, it would have still been a bungalow back then.

Do you know any history about the property or land? I’m desperate to see an old picture of its original state but can’t find any that show that part of the London Road. I’m fascinated by the pictures.

I have lived here from birth (1975) and grew up in Bridgehouse Close, off London Rd.

  • I lived in Carlton Road, Wickford during the 1940s and 50s. We used to travel on the steam trains and Underground Tube trains to our flat in London during the Blitz.

  • Our house, Palatine Villa, was further up on the right hand side of Belmont Avenue. You can see the side of the house and chimney in the distance.

My cousin lived at Craig y Don, just across the road, Jennifer Weeks. We all had Coronation day together!

Frances Dartford added: “Palatine Villa was sold and knocked down for new houses to be built in the 60s. We had an Aga that still remained standing amongst the rubble!  I have a photo of the house I can send. The other properties next to us down to London Road were mainly bungalows, probably built in the 30s. Belmont Avenue was only made up in the late 50s I think. It used to be a bumpy ride up to the house before that.
