Robert Frew Surgery

From a facebook entry from Kay Burrell

“My mum was a receptionist there for 28 years, and retired at the age of 60, in 1990.  She went there as a temp and they never let her go.  This was the party that these three fine doctors gave for her, Dr James, Dr Anderson and Dr Thomas.  Sadly, I don’t think any of them is still with us.”

  • Dr. Robert Frew was our doctor in Woodham Ferrers. He held surgery in the “best room” of Mr and Mrs Cottis (his nickname was ‘Sharper’ Cottis) whose house was the first house on the left past Birkett’s Hall Farm, on the Main Road.
Dr. Frew always drove a Hillman Minx saloon. I remember when Dr. Frew, who was around 80 years old I guess, lost control of his Hillman, heading from Danbury. The vehicle went through the hedge at the bottom of St. Mary’s C.of.E school playground and came to rest in the dung heap in the field. My father rescued the doctor, who was in a bit of a state, and dragged the car out of the dung heap with a tractor.
His son, Thomas, collected him from his surgery at Mr and Mrs Cottis, and Reg. Allan took his car to his workshop and repaired the minor damage on it, and cleaned it up.
