The Nathan family

A Wickford family since 1929

My grandparents Joe and Violet Nathan moved to Shotgate from London about 1929.  They had ‘The Venture Piggeries’ at the end of Bridge Road, and also lived in First Avenue, Shotgate.  They had three daughters Ruth, Gertrude and Sonia, the oldest of whom is now 100. Ruth married a Reginald Anderson and had a son Terry and daughter Jill.  Sonia married Frank Guilder, another local man, and had a son Nigel and daughter Louise. My mum Gertrude, who we call Trudie, married an Edward Reeve, who came from London, and had me, Susan, and my brother Christopher.

  • Was the Frank Guilder who lived in a large white house opposite Davids Way in Swan Lane and was a coal merchant? The hill going down towards Wantz Corner was named by us locals as Guilders Hill. A lot people still don’t know that.
