Solomon Carter was born in Wickford during January 1899, the eldest son of Frank and Ada Carter.

A brother, John ‘Jack’ Percy Bewers Carter was born in 1900 and the young family were living in 92 Victoria Terrace at the time the 1901 Census was taken.

Silva Leslie Bewers Carter came along in 1907 and the 1911 Census shows them living on Runwell Road. They occupied a large house known as Victoria Villas.

Solomon was 18 when he joined up in 1917. He was shipped out on 13th March 1918 as Rifleman 305216 Carter with the 5th London Regiment. Just 15 days later he was captured by the Germans and became a Prisoner of War. He was eventually released on the 15th of December that year.

Sol married Heather Howard in Rochford during 1922 and had a daughter, Janet, in 1932.

Solomon Carter died on 12th October 1941 in Wickford. He was buried in St. Catherine’s Churchyard.
