I was sorting through some old newspaper clippings that had been handed in to Basildon Heritage and came across this Order of Service, in honour of all serving in H.M. Forces, especially former CD Messengers and in particular remembrance of those who have made the supreme sacrifice. The service took place on the 27th May 1945 at Ramsden Bellhouse Church and was conducted by Rev. F.W. Austen
Can anyone give us any information on the C.D. Messengers?

The ARP was renamed the Civil Defense. In August 1939 The district Cyclist Messenger Service of the ARP was started by the two Fisher brothers who lived at Barleylands. ( This farm was known at the time as Fisher’s Farm ) Many local branches grew up mainly in schools but the Laindon Branch was started in Toomey’s Garage.
