  • Trevor A Williams, it seems the newspaper article is from the BASILDON Standard Recorder published at a time when Wickford was part of the Basildon Council area, so it appears to be legitimate reporting.

  • Basildon and Wickford were taking a pasting from Goring’s Luftwaffe.
    Basildon was basically open farmland in 1940, with the exception of Pitsea, Laindon and Vange.
    Wickford was not part of Basildon then and had its fair share of bombing and other incidents. Basildon again trying to claim Wickford history.

  • Going to and from St. George’s School, or shopping in Wickford, I would walk past this place and Mother would say “that is where the bomb dropped”. One evening she took me to the fairground by the railway station. On the way back, passing the site, a man jumped out of the bushes and tried to grab her purse but she was too quick for him and he ran off across the road.
