The Co-op shop, in the 1960s

A request from Carol Powley (nee Southward)

Does anyone have any old photos of the Co-op in the 1960s? I used to work there from 1966 to 1968; the manager was Mr.Biss. Does anyone remember me or Mr. Biss? What happened to him and what is the shop today?

  • My uncle Jim Bush was manager of the Co op in the 1950s, lived above with his wife Molly and children Carole and Hohn

  • My wife Denise worked in the Co-op around about 1966 /67, her surname was Scott (now Bolton) and she lived at “Tye View”, Lower Park Road.
Did Mr Biss have a daughter called either Mary or Margaret? There was a girl with the surname of Biss in my class (5G) in 1965 at Beauchamps. Hope this may jog a memory.

  • I remember the Co-Op way back before that. The shop is a Greek fish shop, and the butcher’s is a carpet shop. I remember Mr Biss vaguely, by my wife’s conversation, but I didn’t do shopping.
