Memories of a bygone Wickford

My grandparents lived in Wickford from 1966 until their deaths, Grandad 1984 and
Grandmother 1994. When they were alive I used to visit them regularly and I remember some good times. I remember seeing Wickford Carnival and throwing coins into the buckets. My grandparents are buried at Nevendon Road cemetery and before the Wick development if you looked towards the main road you could see cows grazing in the fields. I also remember Samson the menswear shop, Woolworths to buy penny sweets. I also remember the old post office before the one way system. There was, if I remember correctly, a toy shop and a haberdashery shop there too. When I was little my Grandad used to hold me up to the railings to see the river (near the garage) Southend Road. In the High Street there used to be a shop on the corner opposite Peacocks that had a record department upstairs. Remember going to Halls Pet shop regularly too. Wickford has changed over the years but it is great to see so many memories posted here.
