'Unexploded bomb' dredged from the Crouch in Wickford.

The Open Day ‘Gumboot Alley’ exhibition drew in many visitors who wanted to share their memories of the floods. One of the visitors pointed to a photo of a digger dredging out the Crouch close to Nevendon Road bridge. He told me that the work had to be stopped as it was thought that they had found an unexploded bomb. All the houses around had to be evacuated and the police kept people away until the Bomb Disposal Unit arrived. It did not take them long to identify it. It was an old oil drum.
