CENSUS 1971

The Enumerators

Census day 1971 was a very important day for me, as I had been selected to be one of the many Census Enumerators Nationwide.  My area was in Wickford North.

I had a 5 year old and a 3 year old at the time so was not working.  The press needed to photograph one of the Enumerators and, since I was available during the day time, I agreed to the task.  Knowing the importance of the job, I dressed with decorum in a calf length beige raincoat.  When the photographer arrived he asked if I had anything a bit more exciting and fashionable to wear.  Hence the hot pants!

It involved weeks’ of work and was not a well paid job, but my husband and two of our neighbours also agreed to take on the work.  Between the four of us and, bearing in mind that this was 1971, on the £58 each of us earned, we were able to take 2 weeks holiday in Sardinia!  Try doing that now!
