A local resident came into one of our memory desks and told us that whilst we are familiar with the stranded bus at the corner of London Road and High Street (Hall’s Corner), there was another bus stuck in water near the bridge over the river in London Road. She said that she remembers it well because her husband was on the bus.

Sept 1958. We were at home in Hereward Gardens and unaware of the flooding. The rain was continuous for 2 hours, with thunder and lightening, locally accompanied by hailstones. The River Crouch flooded the area of the High Street, and people were marooned at the railway station. At Hereward Gardens we were unaware of the flooding until the following morning.
The problem was that the incoming tide coincided with the excess surface rain water and the mill at Battlesbridge could not deal with the problem. The flooding was extensive in the Castledon Road and Sugden Avenue areas, many cattle and pigs were drowned and their corpses floated down the High Street.
After several subsequent floodings the Essex River Board deepened the river and lined the wall with concrete the whole length of the river through the town.

MY DAD WORKED FOR CARTER AND WARD FOR YEARS, AND MY MUM AT RUNWELL HOSPITAL.
