Church Road in Ramsden Bellhouse was much lower than it is now and frequently flooded. Pedestrians had to use a wooden footbridge to cross it and this was often wet and very slippery. In 1939 the road was raised to its present height and a new bridge was built. During its construction traffic was diverted through the two fields on the eastern side of the road, where a temporary bridge had been built.
