Wickford Junior School Swimming Pool

From a Facebook entry from Kay Burrell

I’m sure plenty of you remember this swimming pool at Wickford Juniors – how cold was the water?  Many of us learned to swim here.  I think the year would be around 1963 and I’m pretty sure that in the top picture, the boy 2nd from the right is my brother, Colin Reschwamm.  Unfortunately the picture is not of very good quality – oh the days of the Kodak Brownie!

  • I was at school with Colin Reschwamm. I was a pupil at Wickford Junior School from 1961-1965. I was in the netball team and we won the area netball rally.

  • I certainly do recall the school pool; thanks to our form teacher, Mr Murray, it was where I learned to swim, in my fourth year (1964). He told us to bring our trunks each day, and he took us whenever it was free. I was so proud when I was awarded the yellow ribbon to sew on my trunks for swimming 10 yards, first thing I’d ever won, I think!

  • I also learned to swim in this pool around 1963-4. Also, I was part of the gang of kids who cleaned it out after the bad winter of 1962-3. It was full of stagnant water and slime and I caught a mouthful as I was passing a bucket up to another member of the gang. This resulted in a week off school – bad stomach, (I’ll spare you the details!).
