Wickford Junction Signal Box

Wickford Junction Signal Box.  The train from Southminster approaches  Wickford with the driver handing over the token to the signalman.

On single track rail lines the driver would pick up a token permitting him to take the train.

  • I can remember cleaning the outside of those windows with the trains thundering closely past. Used to terrify me. In my day we never had tokens. We used to go on train as Pilotman and act as a human token. Been up and down the branch a few times as Pilotman.
