Vanished Giants of Wickford

Photographs of JF Corney

Two more pictures of the vanished giant Elm trees that used to grow in and around Wickford.

A doomed survivor about 1960. This splendid elm towered over the bus stop opposite the Downham Arms PH, London Road, showing the former villas.

The same tree, a victim of Dutch Elm Disease, in the 1970s.

  • My wife, when living in Runwell Road, at the bottom of Harold Gardens, in the late 40s/50s, tells of a large elm tree in the front garden. Every week she, as a young child, would have to go round and cut off the shoots that were coming through the skirting boards.
