The Queen's Silver Jubilee

Street Party in Ethelred Gardens

Just before the rain came
Diane Sheehy

1977 was the Queen’s Silver Jubilee year and the residents of Ethelred Gardens in Runwell held a street party. A committee was set up. A collection was made week by week for funds.

The weather on the day was not very promising! Nevertheless we went ahead with sports down the middle of the road: egg and spoon race, sack race with prizes, fancy dress. There was a wonderful turnout.

The weather finally let us down with a downpour just as we all sat down for tea. In fact some of the children went under the table with their teas.

Then the sun came out and we all enjoyed a disco thanks to the hospitality of number 11. The day finished with all the children being presented with various souvenirs, and happy memories for us all.
