Wickford Carnival 1979, the Court.

The photograph below shows Wickford Carnival court in 1979.

Carnival Queen, Miss Wendy Cosson; Carnival Princesses, Miss Gillian Hurford and Miss Jane O’Keefe.

Over the last 30 years the Carnival route has been altered with the growth of the town. Originally the route was from Castledon Road, along London Road and High street to the carnival ground at Runwell Church fields.

Later it came down from Shotgate to Nevendon Recreation ground.

When the bypass was built the route was changed again, from Church End Lane, Runwell, through Swan Lane and the High street.

  • My over riding memory of carnival day 1979 were the unfortunate events following its conclusion. My nan and grandad were run down on the crossing at Halls Corner on the way home. A very harrowing experience for a 10 year old.
I believe PC Whiter was our family’s liaison officer at the time, something for which we will be forever grateful.

  • My sister, Sandra Callaghan, was Carnival Queen back in 1974 and has very fond memories of being Carnival Queen.
