Looking at both pictures again, I realised that the picture looking at the blocks of terraced houses opposite- Kemble Villas, was taken from Joe’s house, as the driveway is on the left of the property, so it was the house behind the tree, as I thought.

Further to my previous comment, I think the King family lived in the house on the left. Their son went to the same school as me in Wickford, passed the 11Plus and went to King Edward VI Grammar in Chelmsford.

I used to live opposite, in Kemble Villas, subsequently numbered from 72 upwards. If I remember correctly, the Saunders family lived in the house to the right of the picture and I remember Joe dashing out in his car, I think that in addition to the fire alarm sounding from Wickford, I seem to remember a bell ringing in his tailoring room upstairs at the front of the house. Does anyone remember when numbering of the properties was adopted in preference to names? I think it was in the late 1950s early 1960s but can’t remember precisely when.

Joe Saunders was a good friend of my family. Joe was a volunteer (reserved) fireman in Wickford, and we would often hear the fire siren and Joe would rush off to the fire station. He would take great pride in his part time brigade getting to a fire before the full time brigade from Basildon. Joe was a tailor by trade and my mother used to do tailoring work for him at home. I knew both his daughters, although I was a bit younger than them. These pictures bring back memories.
