The Happy Hours Club

The Happy Hours Club was a group run by Reg Tidridge within the Runwell Youth Club. The Club was for disabled young people. These pictures show the Club’s entry to the Wickford Carnival around 1979/80.

Pictured in the top picture are June Tidridge, Joan Stevens, Caroline Stevens and Val Bewers. Does anyone remember more about this Club?

  • My Mum, Iris Orr (who later became a member of Wickford Inner Wheel), was involved in The Happy Hours Club in the mid 70’s. Iris was club secretary for a good while and she helped to organise their summer fetes. Being a long term friend of Mick Kemp, he allowed the use of his wonderful garden in Castledon Road. The fete was opened with Mike Beecher, his fantastic marching band and the majorettes who played and marched from The London Road. A super event raising money and awareness for the club.

  • I was Happy Hours Club chairman from it’s formation, my wife Joan appears in the photos above. The photos bring back many happy memories and I hope we brought some enjoyment to the families of disabled children. Our son was born Downs Syndrome and the Club was a great support, bringing us many new friends.
