This is the caption in the newspaper beneath this photograph:
“Wickford suffers again. The little town became the worst hit in the county once more when floodwater surged into the streets on Tuesday night. Only one main road, from Nevendon, remained open. At Runwell, on the outskirts of Wickford, a public meeting about the recent flooding had to be abandoned. The floods had risen again. Houses belonging to members of the audience were going under water for the second time.”

Wickford proves a point. I have lived here nearly 83 years and seen Wickford flooded many times, but when they dug out the river and concreted it, it never flooded. So as Wickford High Street is on a flood plain with three bridges around it, this is an example to the authorities to dredge out rivers and possibly widen in areas where they can. The rivers around Wickford need cleaning out BADLY. I think barges used to come into Wickford before my time; it is hard to believe.
