  • I’ve recently found that Col. Burton, MP for Sudbury, lived at Wickford Hall in the 1930s and 40s.
He was also the father of Wickford Home Guard, formed in 1939. The Wickford Home Guard unit was the first to go on patrol in the UK.

  • I met a gentleman at Billericay library yesterday at the History event there. I was asking him whether he knew anything about Wickford Hall. I believe that John Robert Spurling and his family lived there for a while sometime around 1910 onwards. He was a wealthy wharfinger from Bethnal Green. He gradually moved out of Middlesex, going up in the world each move. After Wickford Hall, I think he was at Downham Grange, before buying Hill House Farm in Billericay, where he died in 1933. Would be interested if you know anymore about him or Wickford Hall.
