I’m putting together a family history for my daughter-in-law who is a Saffell and related to the Wheatsheaf family. Any info and pictures would be great.

I used to visit this pub back in the 60s with my mum, Mary. I believe she was born at the pub in 1928. My Nan, Ada Saffell, used to be landlady. I’m not sure how long the family lived there, but I remember my mum telling me the story of when a Messerschmitt crashed in the garden near to the air raid shelter. Years later when I visited the pub in the late 90s/early 2000s, there was a book on the bar with some of my family history. No idea what happened to the book, as pub closed down soon afterwards.

That Austin 7 could have been my Grandad’s car (another Bob). He was a Union Convener for the T.G.W.U, for farm workers in this area, and probably visited many of the local pubs in the1940s. He could not carry any passengers as the spare wheel was on the back seat, and his office was the front seats. I never saw what was in the boot.

Ah, for the slow way of life. The car (left) is a Ford Y model 8hp and the other looks like an Austin 7. The Ford is the same type I learned to drive in.
