Some of us bikers from Leigh and Southend used to have a ride along the Arterial Road and visit The Carpenters. It was the 1960s and the ride out was just for the sake of it – you can get bored sitting in the same caff each evening! There was plenty of parking for our BSA Bantams, Tiger Cubs and so on. Most of us were apprentices and we’d just have a couple of halves and ride back. No trouble or problems at all. There didn’t seem to be many locals around. I think the garage was there but it was very small…

I hope someone will correct any errors in what I have written below. During the 1960s the Swan Pub in Wickford was run by John(?) and Connie(?) Gardner. In the 1970s(?) they moved from Wickford and took over The Carpenters Arms.

My mum and dad met there in the war years (Iris McCartney and Edgar Searles) and I often had Sunday lunch there with my dad.

What happened to the cottages behind The Carpenters Arms? I don’t remember any that close, that must have been early 1900s.

They used to have a blue parrot in a cage outside at this pub when I was a child.
