Linda, are you any relation to Norman Golding who lived left hand corner of Athelstan Gardens, mid 1940s, where they had a large orchard and sold me toffee apples on my way home from school.

I used to go to school with Dougie Greenham who lived nearly opposite. I believe his father was a minister there, sometime ago?

The church still stands in the Nevendon Road. The corrugated iron was removed and replaced with a pebbledash exterior and a modern front extension added in recent years. The name “Peculiar People” derived from Titus 2 v 14 when the term meant ‘special’. With the word changing in meaning to indicate something weird, the churches in this group are now known as the Union of Evangelical Churches. There are currently 16 churches, mainly in Essex. The Wickford Evangelical Church celebrates its centenary this year and plans to hold a special event to mark this occasion on Saturday, Sept 15th.
