Wickford Community Archive

Help us to preserve yesterday for tomorrow

The Wickford Community Archive is a website created and being developed by local volunteers, to preserve our community's history for the future. We will include memories, photographs and local knowledge of Wickford, of the distant past and of more recent times. 'Wickford', for the purpose of this Archive, includes Runwell, Battlesbridge, Shotgate, Rawreth, North Benfleet, Crays Hill, Downham and the Ramsdens, although the boundaries are very flexible.

People make up the most important part of our community. When a resident dies we would like to preserve that person's life history within our community's history; please consider providing the archive with an obituary or the funeral eulogy, as a permanent memory of a loved one, for other people to read and appreciate.

Want to play your part?

First you'll need to register a username and password. Then you can add pages to the site.

If you would like to join our group of volunteers recording people's oral histories and researching topics of local interest please contact us by email wickfordhistory@gmail.com or through Wickford Library 01268 732354.

Perhaps you would like to discuss informally how you might contribute to the archive, so why not visit us at one of our Memory Desks. (For details of their times, please click on 'Meet the Archive Group at their regular Memory Desk' in the adjacent 'First Visit?' box).

Geoff Fairey.

It was with great sadness that we heard of the sudden death of one of our frequent contributors, Geoff Fairey. His comments and articles had come from his home in Majorca, where he had lived for many years, although he spent his early years in Wickford. His mother, Sue Fairey, lived in Wickford until her death in 2014. Geoff's funeral was in Majorca but his ashes will be brought back for burial at St. Catherine's Church.
