Wickford Carnival, 1946.

From the collection of Mrs Iris Logan

Wickford Carnival in August 1946. The two photos show the Dagenham Girl Pipers and a vintage car. The cottages behind were situated in London Road between St Andrew’s Hall and Woodlands Road. A family by the name of Shuttleworth lived in one. Shops now occupy the space.

  • I remember it well. We had some good carnivals in those days. We started off in Castledon Road (there was no pub there then, just a field with a sign saying in future there would be a pub called (The Queens?) I cant remember. I did it with cubs, scouts and ATC. We marched from there to the fields opposite the Quart Pot in Runwell Road, from the age of eight. The Dagenham Girl Pipers were great. We seemed to always have a band to lead us, and did not realise the distance. I think it was 1949 that I won the raffle on the field, it was a no.3 Meccano set and I walked home proud with this large box.
