The Storm of October 1987 (b)

I lived in South Hanningfield at the time and remember quite vividly all the trees falling down along the road and we were unable to get out of the village because of fallen trees.  We had no electricity either and at the time there was no gas in the village.  I do remember that Les Irving who ran the Old Windmill in those days opened up the pub to all villagers for warmth and food as he had power by gas bottles.  It was a very wonderful feeling as all the villagers gathered together to pool their resources to help those who were housebound
