Mr Kemp's Memories

Memories of Mr Kemp

Mount Road was a dirt track from Southend Road to the river.  There was only a few bungalows there in the 1930s.  Dirty water would have been just thrown outside, but sewage would have been thrown in the river! Many a time I remember dead cats in there too!

My Mother was born at no. 7 The Broadway, (now USA Chips and Burgers).

A land-mine was dropped on Mr. Bartlett’s during the war, he had a small-holding and the land-mine killed over 200 chickens.

I remember standing in Runwell Road watching a German plane overhead.  It looked as though it was going to crash in Wickford, but the pilot pulled it up and it eventually crashed at Downham.  We used to collect metal shrapnel and ammunition.
