The Methodist church in Southend Road became redundant when the United Reform Church was built. It was demolished in 1975 to make way for Wickford bypass.
The bypass was not built until 1980 or so and this church still existed when I finished primary school in 1982. PC Whiter – my bro was in your son’s class at primary school, Market Road… sad how Basildon Council eliminated two churches and The Castle pub… no wonder Prime Minister Callaghan referred to Basildon Council as “Moscow on Thames”.
[I believe it was Teresa Gorman MP who said this. Ed]

This looks derelict and overgrown, it wasn’t like that when I went there in approx. 1947.
